There's so much power in believing that everything will work out even when you don't know how or when. You just believe that it will.

MT Scholar Promise Ekpo Emerges as 2026 NCWIT AiC Collegiate Award Recipient Promise Ekpo, a 2020 MT Scholar, has emerged as one of the recipients of this year's National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) Aspirations in Computing (AiC) award. The award recognizes technical contributions to projects that demonstrate a high level of innovation and potential impact. Driven by research showing that preventable teamwork failures in hospitals contribute to over 200,000 deaths annually in the United States, Promise developed MARLHospital, a multi-agent reinforcement learning simulator that models emergency teamwork and clinician fatigue. The platform allows hospital protocols to be customized while supporting both research and medical education. Healthcare collaborators at Weill Cornell Medicine’s Emergency Care Center and Northwell Health New York have attested to the simulator’s realism and potential as a valuable training tool. Speaking on the motivation behind her work, Promise said, "Errors are more likely to occur when team members get burnt out. I built a simulator to evaluate team dynamics and designed fairness algorithms for heterogeneous teams' collaboration that better align with the real world." The award will be presented in June 2026 at the NCWIT Summit in Colorado, USA. Congratulations, Promise, on this remarkable achievement and the impact you continue to make in STEM, robotics, and healthcare innovation. We are inspired by your commitment to research excellence and solutions that can improve lives globally. Check the comments section for links to the official NCWIT announcement and the video presentation of her work.

I still remember when @SirJarus and I interviewed Promise for the MT Scholarships. We knew instantly that she is destined for great things. Left us all laughing. Then the very next interview after hers was Emmanuel Nworie's and he left us all crying. That day was an emotional roller coaster. Super proud of Promise!

From UNIBEN to Cornell: MT Scholar Promise Ekpo Advancing AI and Empowering Women in Tech Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a complex concept that frequently features in today’s conversations. For 2020 MT Scholar, Promise Ekpo, however, AI is far from theoretical. It is a powerful tool for solving real-world problems and improving critical systems. Recently, Promise helped facilitate a collaboration between Rewriting the Code (RTC) and the Women in Tech community at Cornell University. RTC is a free community that supports women navigating the technology industry by providing mentorship, professional development opportunities, and a network of peers with shared ambitions. The event brought together graduate students, industry recruiters, and technology leaders for a panel discussion and networking session focused on career pathways in technology. Representatives from organizations such as Distyl AI, Khosla Ventures, and Millennium Management participated, offering valuable insights into industry opportunities and recruitment pathways. The gathering was designed to create an environment where women in technology could connect, ask questions, and access mentorship and career resources that support their professional growth. Promise is a First-Class graduate in Computer Engineering from the University of Benin, where she graduated with an outstanding CGPA of 4.75/5.00. She is currently pursuing her PhD at Cornell University, focusing on Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL), a branch of AI that studies how multiple intelligent systems collaborate to make decisions in complex environments. She also serves as a Graduate Research Assistant at AirLAB within Cornell’s Computer Science department. Beyond her research, Promise remains committed to strengthening the broader technology ecosystem, particularly by supporting women entering the field. #MTScholarships #GradSchool #AI #IntelligentSystems #ComputerEngineering

I hate to break it to you. But you will fail. No matter how well you plan. You will fail. There is no escape from it. You can strategize like Pep. You can plan like Michael Scofield. But you will still fail. The only question is whether you get back up.
