For the past five years, I've been documenting the impact of changes to Michigan's auto insurance law on badly injured drivers. In my latest reporting, I found a paralyzed man forced to live in an extended stay hotel; a young mom who can't get caregivers at her home every day; and a suburban Detroit father of three whose in-home care is tenuous. They have all been blindsided by a safety net cut by state lawmakers for savings that, according to the @GovWhitmer's administration, amounted to less than $30 a month for the average Michigan motorist — the monthly cost of a gym membership or car wash. Auto insurance rates have continued to rise since the 2019 auto insurance reform. Some may blame critical legal decisions; however, the majority of these rate hikes were approved by DIFS prior to the Andary decision.

Are you really on my side Nationwide? Kirt Walker received over $3 million in compensation in 2022 and nearly $4 mil in 2021. It's policyholders that fund these CEO paydays.

So much for Good Hands... CEO Thomas Wilson received a $18,902,127 million dollar compensation package in 2022 while policyholders were socked with higher premiums.

Auto insurance costs for policyholders were up 19% in 2023 compared to 2022. No wonder, when their CEOs are raking in massive salaries, bonuses and other payments.

Insurance rate skyrocket while insurance company CEOs pull in millions!

"State Farm paid its CEO Michael Tipsord over $24 million while hiking auto rates..." Michael DeLong of Consumers Federation of America reports in his recent research of the 10 largest insurers' CEO compensation.

The little guy keeps taking it on the chin! Liberty Mutual paid its CEO David Long over $15 million in 2022 while increasing its homeowners insurance rates by $729.8 million.

Michael DeLong, CFA’s Research and Advocacy Associate said in a press release, “Insurers are telling regulators that ordinary consumers have to pay much more for auto and home insurance because the companies are struggling... but they are quietly handing CEOs gigantic bonuses."

“CEOs are living high on the hog while increasing insurance premiums for people living paycheck to paycheck,” said Michael DeLong, @consumerfed Research and Advocacy Associate in a recent press release following a review of insurance executive compensation.

While 2019 auto insurance reforms technically prohibited auto insurers from using credit scores to set rates, the legislation contained massive loopholes that allowed the practice to continue.

According to a new report from the Consumer Federation of America (CFA), safe drivers in Michigan with poor credit pay a whopping 263% more than safe drivers with excellent credit.
