The illegal wildlife trade in Indonesia is dominated by the trade in songbirds. During 2021-2023, out of 174,397 live individual animals seized from the illegal wildlife trade, 91.49 per cent were songbirds.  These numbers illustrate how massive the illegal trade in songbirds is in Indonesia.

On Nov 10, the Tanjung Karang District Court sentenced M Yusuf to 5 years in prison and a fine of IDR 200,000,000 for smuggling hundreds of Sumatran songbirds. In the verdict, the judge stated that Yusuf was proven guilty of smuggling 336 wild birds, 132 of which were protected species.

These birds were rescued from the illegal wildlife trade some time ago. When they were rescued, they were not yet ready to be released. Some were found sick, and their wings had been damaged due to poachers’ traps.

On Feb 25, judges at the Tanjung Karang District Court in Lampung sentenced two perpetrators of the illegal trade in 6,154 songbirds, more than 250 birds of which are protected, to 3 years and 3 months in prison and a fine of Rp 7,000,000 (approximately USD 437) each.
