Jose Medina and his mother were reportedly connected to RefugeeOne, a Chicago-based refugee resettlement program. RefugeeOne provides housing assistance, rent support, and other basic services to individuals in its programs. Public filings show the organization operates with roughly 13.9 million dollars in annual revenue, including government-backed funding tied to refugee resettlement. At the state level, Illinois has directed hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars toward migrant and asylum-seeker programs, including approximately 478 million dollars allocated for assistance, while American citizens wait in line for basic services. J. B. Pritzker and Brandon Johnson have supported and worked with organizations like RefugeeOne through public events, appointments, and funding tied to these programs. On August 28, 2023, the same year Medina and his mother came into the country, Governor J.B. Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson sent a joint letter to U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. In it, they urged the federal government to use “Significant Public Benefit” parole to create a streamlined process allowing states to sponsor non-citizens for fast-track work authorization in industries facing labor shortages, providing a quicker pathway to self-sufficiency for asylum seekers. At the time, they noted that Illinois and Chicago had already spent and obligated over 250 million dollars to support more than 13,000 asylum seekers who had arrived since August 2022. How touching. While an 18-year-old American college student named Sheridan Gorman lies dead, shot in the back by an illegal who was released into the country and released again after shoplifting, and who was apparently tied to these very programs, Pritzker and Johnson were busy bending over backward to fast-track work permits and benefits for people like Medina. Are we now getting full cooperation from Minnesota on ICE detainers after the deal struck under Tom Homan?
Before the surge, Minnesota officials claimed they honored detainers—but DHS reported over 1,360 active ICE detainers sitting on criminal illegal aliens in state prisons and county jails, with hundreds allegedly released onto the streets anyway. State prisons transferred only about 83 people to ICE in 2025. County jails varied wildly, with limited or no holds in many places. 
Now, thanks to Homan’s Operation Metro Surge and direct pressure, Homan reports “unprecedented cooperation”: an unprecedented number of counties are now notifying ICE and allowing agents to take custody of illegal aliens directly from jails before they hit the streets. This lets ICE use just 1-2 officers per pickup instead of 8-10 for at-large street arrests. The surge led to roughly 4,000 detentions/removals in Minnesota, and Homan used that progress to draw down 700+ federal agents while declaring Minnesota “less of a sanctuary state for criminals.” 
What exactly did taxpayers gain from this “surrender”/pressure campaign in Minnesota?
Safer streets? Fewer criminal releases? Hard numbers on detainer compliance rates before vs. now? How many more criminal aliens are being handed over instead of released?
Can anyone from ICE Minnesota field office provide the updated stats—detainers honored pre-surge vs. post-Homan, monthly transfers from county jails, and a straight assessment of how well this new cooperation is actually working on the ground?
Transparency on the numbers would show whether the deal delivered real results for public safety and taxpayer dollars.
