There is a large part of the world that will demand you commit to nothing and that you take things easy. That you choose shallow waters over the deep sea. That you abandon your humanity for some sense of freedom. It’s important that you turn away from these cowards and take your life seriously. That you commit to family, friends, and lovers. That you devote time to your work and passions. That you wake up each day and choose to live despite your fears. And that after each day ends, you lay your head on your pillow with the satisfaction of being deeply human. This is the greatest act of rebellion.

Faulkner followed up his thoughts on The Catcher in the Rye by comparing/contrasting Holden with Huck Finn. I like the bit about trying to "save mankind from being de-souled as the stallion or boar or bull is gelded, to save the individual from anonymity before it is too late..."

William Faulkner on The Catcher in the Rye. It's an evocative comment ("when he attempted to enter the human race, there was no human race there") and high praise, though it totally misses the redemptive note that ends the book:

My husband had this “eureka moment”. We talked about marriage on the second day together and got married a few months after we met. Four years and two babies later, here we are! Btw this happens more often than you think, yes even today
clara@caviarkittie

I believe society's decadence is partly due to the fact that men no longer have eureka moments when they see a woman. I don't remember the last time I heard a man saying he saw a girl and decided he had to marry her.

everyone needs a gandalf sometimes. you have a responsibility to groom people into the heroes you see in them that you know the world needs. you should be issuing calls to adventure when you cannot hear your own
