I understand the intention saying Patlabor focuses on the characters, but the statement "unlike others, this focuses on the characters" feels a little flawed as nearly every show is character driven. Yet, I can say Patlabor is does treat it's world and cast differently than most

'PATLABOR The Mobile Police' creators say the series isn't a robot anime, but a slice-of-life series Hidetaka Tenjin: “Mamoru Oshii told me, ‘This is actually my first time doing a robot anime!’” Yutaka Izubuchi: “Oshii probably doesn’t see Patlabor as a robot anime.” Tenjin: “I told him, ‘But I’m working on Patlabor right now,’ and Oshii replied, ‘Ah, but Patlabor is basically a slice-of-life series.’” Izubuchi: “That’s not entirely wrong.” Kazunori Ito: “I never wrote it thinking of it as a robot anime either.” Masami Yuki: “If you think of it as a robot anime, it has way too many flaws.” Izubuchi: “Exactly! It’s something different! It’s not Gundam!”
