HOT BUTTON ISSUE: Celebrities endorsing #psychedelics. Some argue that celebrities coming out in support of psychedelics and psychedelic therapy is diminishing the credibility of these substances and related therapies. Some also see it as a slap in the face to the indigenous people who have relied on psychedelics for centuries for medicinal, ceremonial, and other purposes as well as a slap in the face to the scientists and other professionals who have devoted years of their work studying psychedelics in an attempt to more effectively understand their efficacy in treating many different illnesses and disorders. Personally, I would never rely solely on a celebrity endorsement for anything. I also think it’s important to question the intent behind any endorsement. However, in terms of helping to remove the stigma that has been associated with psychedelics for decades, I can see some value in celebrities who unquestionably have an expansive reach through their platforms contributing to this specific objective. Context, intent, and framing is always important. But what do you think? Are the majority of celebrities causing more harm than good by coming out in support of psychedelics? Or are they a strategic vehicle for helping to move them into the mainstream? @PSYC_Spot
