The first preview screening of Bruce Robinson's "Withnail & I" (1987) appeared to be a total disaster- the audience sat there stony-faced, never laughing once. It was only after the screening had concluded that a distraught Bruce Robinson discovered that the audience was comprised entirely of non-English speaking German tourists who were all staying at a hotel nearby. (Source: IMDb) P.S: On this day, 39 years ago, "Withnail & I" (1987) premiered in New York New Directors and New Films Festival, USA.

Executives used to be industry veterans with taste that understood that a good director who was easy to deal with was worth developing rather than grabbing low budget filmmakers and handing them tentpoles or asking a director to make a variation of the same film for their career

@BestMovieMom The way this is written, it says Hardy wasn’t allowed to see the film.

Tom Hardy played Charles Bronson in Bronson, Britain’s most notorious prisoner, & wasn’t allowed to see the film. Bronson said if his mother liked it, that was enough. She loved it. He loved Hardy so much he cut off his mustache & mailed it to him.

There’s a million things wrong with this article on LOTR, but let’s take just one glaring error, that “the heroes are always good.” Recall that Frodo, the story’s protagonist, FAILS in the end to destroy the Ring. When the moment comes, he decides to keep it. It’s only because Gollum attacks him and bites off his finger does the ring fall, together with Gollum and Frodo’s finger, into the fires of Mount Doom. This was the hidden role that Gollum had to play in what Tolkien called the eucatastrophe—the unforeseen appearance of divine grace and intervention at a moment when all is lost. In Tolkien’s legendarium, morality is black and white—just like it is in our world. But his characters are not black and white, they’re fallen and complicated, just like real people are.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is an iconic film series, but it also has many elements that are difficult to watch in modern day. cbr.com/8-reasons-toug…

@johnddavidson Boromir was heroic but flawed. Denethor went mad but stayed good. Saruman was good but became evil. Tolkien wrote quite complex characters. And that's not even getting to perhaps his most complex and tragic one, Turin in the First Age.

@dylanohernandez “ . . . there was no trace of the skepticism that was permeating the Dodgers at the time.” Skepticism? They just gave him the biggest contract for a pitcher in history.

Japanese citizens have called it what it is: a JSDF member's armed intrusion into China's embassy—an act of terror. The Defense Minister must resign. Japan's rising extremism has consequences. Stop provoking neighbors. Admit the wrong. Apologize.

Japan's level of shamelessness is so appalling that it makes any person with basic reasoning skills roll their eyes in utter disgust.🙄 Kyodo News: Officer broke into Chinese embassy to "convey opinions". China's FM Spokesperson: With a knife?😒

What was the field called before? Just “the field at Dodger Stadium” lol. That’s how trivial this is. No one says that part out loud. It’s still DS, just with more ads, oh no. The elevator tower one gotta go though. It’s unbalanced, ugly af, and not even “field” adjacent.

I’m not sure if I explained it clearly due to my English, but what I mean is this: anyone who has bought shares in major defense companies should closely monitor the direction of the war and have a solid understanding of the supply chain.

Another effect of the prolonged and escalating war is that it will directly impact defense stocks in more unpredictable ways. What appear to be solid gains may be affected by supply chain strains due to high demand, Chinese policies, and subsequent delivery delays, requiring heightened attention from market analysts.

@TheCinesthetic I wasn’t crazy about this scene. Another instance of the protagonist hitting every target while a dozen bad guys all miss, like stormtroopers.
