An Israeli court has extended by two days, until 5 May, the detention of Saif Abu Keshek, a Spanish-Swedish Palestinian activist, and Thiago Avila, a Brazilian activist, after Israeli forces seized members of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) in international waters off Greece while they were attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
According to the Brazilian embassy, Avila said he was tortured, beaten and mistreated in Israeli detention, with officials reportedly seeing visible marks on his face during a monitored visit. The Global Sumud Flotilla also said Abu Keshek was subjected to torture and severe abuse aboard an Israeli military vessel before being transferred.
Legal rights group Adalah, which is representing the two activists, said the proceedings are “flawed and illegal”, arguing Israel has no legal basis to apply these charges to foreign nationals taken from international waters. Spain and Brazil have also described their detention as illegal.
