The report also noted that nine injuries were eighteen to twenty-four hours old. The latter included a “V shaped bruise of size 7.1 x 1.6 cm” on the chest, an injury to the head resulting in a haemorrhage and a bruise below the right eye. A little over thirty-six hours after Jaswinder’s last medical examination—around 2.45 am on 20 March—Lovejeet Kaur, his wife received a phone call from Aakash Rai, who told her that Jaswinder’s blood pressure had dropped significantly and that he had been taken to Pulse Hospital in Amritsar, located over two hundred kilometres away. He asked the family to come to Amritsar. “I thought he was lying so that they can harass us more. Perhaps it was a trap to call us,” Lovejeet said. She pressed further—there were many hospitals in Jammu, she said, so why take him to Amritsar just because his blood pressure fell? “He kept saying that I should come and then cut the call.” When the family finally saw Jaswinder in the mortuary of the civil hospital in Amritsar, they found his body riddled with bruises and welts. But only when they removed his clothes and turned him on his stomach did they witness the true horror.
