@taiki_phrases "They don’t WANT a reply" sounds a bit extreme. They maybe don’t "EXPECT" a reply, but I'm sure some of them are happy I have small talk with the staff from the konbini where I often go. There is nothing bad at being friendly and it can even create a small friendly connection 😊

Konbini clerks say いらっしゃいませ but they don't want a reply. I've watched tourists say "Hi!" back. The clerk freezes every time. It's a sound effect, not a greeting. Just walk in. And just walk out.
