@PurensPhD @smokeyrgreens I bought some McDonald's sweet tea when they introduced it a few years ago. A few miles later i opened the car door and dumped it on the street. I still have that awful taste in my mouth. The bugs can keep it.

@chr1sa Exact language: "I bet you $500 that on your daughter’s 16th birthday, it won’t be possible and legal for someone with no driver’s license to hop into a self-driving car in DC, give it an address in Philly, take a nap, and wake up at her destination 3-4 hours later."

In 2010, I made a bet with Ryan Avent, then at the Economist, about the future of self-driving. He thought his then-infant daughter would never need a driver's license because AVs would be ready by 2026. I thought that was too optimistic. It's now 2026, and I won the bet.

There is a propaganda element here where it is more useful to show the solo kills since it looks creepy and may make incoming soldiers decide to surrender or desert earlier. I notice in the UKR footage where squads are using shotguns to defend against FPVs, the replies are filled with ppl saying they’d love to go drone hunting with the boys etc, it looks way more fun when you do it with friends despite being in mortal danger the whole time

I know we are inured to the Ukranian drone war footage now, but one of the things that strikes me as incredulous is how many of these strikes are just... individual Russian soldiers walking alone on a path? It really feels like theres just guys sent to wander into Ukraine.

@Jesse_Livermore Can they actually re-open it? How are they going to convince everyone that it’s safe within the next… 45 hours? Taking a W seems good, but, I also suspect any actions they take won’t have much change on Trump’s next actions.

@DeepDishEnjoyer Covid, on the whole, saw so much international cooperation that the supply shocks were minimized. Now, we find out when the first defection happens in the Prisoner’s dilemma…

@teal_andrew @OCpatriot_ Eh, there’s no real A2A peer and the ground attack mission makes sense and played out well in the teaching//training scenes They made a great movie

@OCpatriot_ Shower thought 2: why was the movie all about ground attack when the point of Top Gun is dogfighting skills? The air to air at the end was a sloppy tack on to the movie.

Shower thought. In Top Gun: Maverick, if they knew where all the SAM emplacements were, why didn't they Tomahawk or HARM missile all of them along the teams' ingress and egress corridors?

@OCpatriot_ @eastdakota The hint that the director wanted us to understand the movie this way is that none of it makes sense (But seriously, great movie, way over performed)

@The4thEstate @Watchman_motto Laundry is close to the bedrooms and the area you’ll be spending most of your day off in so you can check on it Bedroom size is what people wanted, that’s just a trade off for sq. ft elsewhere, not a criticism of the floor plan

I think the mid-century aesthetic is trying to fool us into thinking this is a good floor plan. Laundry right next to kitchen? Barely any windows. Bedrooms smooshed together in back. Family room facing street. Picture the brick swapped with today’s popular white vinyl siding. I appreciate what you’re getting at, and this plan is better than the modern low income home, but this is far from ideal.

The thing about these old homes is that the floor plan is always genius. You may think that you can come up with a better floor plan, but even modern architects have a hard time doing it right. It’s also not intuitive why this is so nice, and many people have a hard time seeing it in their mind’s eye when looking at a print.

OTD in 1989: USS Tennessee (SSBN-734) conducted the first submerged test launch of a Trident II (D5) missile, which failed about 4 seconds into flight. After modifications, Tennessee conducted the first successful submerged test launch on August 2, 1989 & there have been 197 successful Trident II launches since.

@PurensPhD @ArielZuk1 @bigseb31213 Sort of, both sides independently invented it in the late 30s; there is record of both sides being reluctant to use it initially due to copying concerns, despite them having independently invented it anyway, but Windon / Düppel was used extensively after 1943.

@sham_da_wowNMS @rappadapa @christernyberg They did lots of tricks, Doohan used his left hand for the communicator, and his right was often just hidden behind something casually. Definitely a must have for any ST drinking game, ‘Scotty hides his hand’ -> take a shot

@JoshiBruceL @as_a_worker It’s not like they designed and built a salt cavern. I’d guess that the geos and engineers told them they had no idea how long it would last but 5 times over 25 years was defensible.

The US Strategic Petroleum Reserve is stored in huge salt caverns. It was only designed to be topped off and emptied 5 times with an operational lifespan of 25 years. It’s been topped off and emptied 9 times since 1977. The faltering empire relies on what were once redundancies
