Surely there must be an Ikechi Anya type player with a Scottish gran that Scotland could call upon to give us some pace... This has been worse I've watched Scotland play since our last friendly games 🙄

How can people seriously blame these guys for moving down south? Stay here and get no wages, no pathway and play 6th tier football until you’re 22 years old - completely stunting your growth. Until we incorporate youth prospects in first team squads, there’s no point staying.

Wide midfielders/wingers: This is the area of the pitch I feel Steve Clarke ought to experiment with most in this month’s friendlies. Ben Gannon-Doak has been the only natural winger called up in recent Scotland squads and I believe we have been left short in this position. Gannon-Doak did make a return to Bournemouth’s bench yesterday after almost four months out with a hamstring injury picked up in Scotland’s famous 4-2 victory over Denmark in November, but I think he could be better served continuing his recovery with his club rather than join up with the national team this month. One player who has regularly been deployed out wide for Scotland of late is fans’ favourite John McGinn. Like fellow Scotland star McTominay, McGinn has recently been on the sidelines at club level for Villa due to a knee injury, but given he has featured in the last two matches for Unai Emery’s side, he should be ready to accept an international call-up. One of three fresh faces who I think could be worth a look at out wide is Rangers loanee Findlay Curtis, who joined ranks with Kilmarnock in January. A highly-rated player in Rangers’ academy, Curtis made 21 appearances for the Gers in all competitions in the first half of the season before signing for Killie on loan. Naturally a left winger but capable of playing on either flank, Curtis delivered an impressive performance in Killie’s 1-0 win over league Scottish Prem leaders Hearts last night with Scotland boss Steve Clarke watching on from the Rugby Park stands. Another left-field option who I think is worth a shot for Scotland this month is Union Berlin’s Oliver Burke. Capped 13 times by Scotland, Burke hasn’t been involved with the national team for six years now having struggled to find a home at club level. The 28-year-old finally appears to have settled in German football, starting 14 games for Union Berlin in the Bundesliga this season. Although Burke has typically been deployed as a striker by Union Berlin, he has played seven matches on the right wing this season and it is in this role that I feel he could be of most use to the national team given the makeup of our squad. In the absence of Gannon-Doak, Scotland are sorely lacking in pacy options in the final third with Burke potentially a useful alternative. Although Burke’s technical ability can leave a lot to be desired at times, his speed and power are undeniable and I can’t help but feel these attributes would add a lot to this current Scotland squad. Capping off my wildcard wingers is Adedire Mebude. An academy product of Man City, Mebude initially struggled in his transition to men’s football during loan spells at Bristol City and Hamburg before an underwhelming spell at Westerlo in the Belgian Pro League. The 21-year-old has made an encouraging start to life in the Turkish Süper Lig since signing for Rizespor in January, however, registering two goals and two assists in his first seven appearances. Mebude is a player who has regularly caught the eye when I have watched Scotland’s Under-21s over the last few years, and given the senior side’s lack of wingers at the moment, he is a youngster who I think could add something a bit different to the squad.

Steve Clarke is expected to name his Scotland squad for this month's friendlies against Japan and Côte d'Ivoire this week. Here is the 26-man squad I would like to see picked. (A thread 🧵): Please leave a ♥️ and follow @scotball_ for more national team-focused content.

Is this the wildcard wing option Scotland have been missing? Ahead of the World Cup, I feel Scotland are particularly light in options on the flanks aside from Ben Gannon-Doak. One young player who I think could be worth a look at is Dire Mebude. Here is why… (A thread 🧵):
