@Purfylle

Purfylle is a word that has fallen out of common use and means ‘to embellish’. At Purfylle every day is an exploration of embellishing life.

@HowtoADHD I hope I find some 5am inspiration to respond to this call for comment from the public on the draft Guidelines for Australian Clinicians. I wish I had your skills and knowledge to help. I hope your dreams are more fun tonight. aadpa.com.au/draft-adhd-gui…

Had a nightmare I had a talk to give at 2pm I’d completely forgotten about and scrambled to come up with an idea that didn’t need slides. Woke up and realized it was a nightmare. But the idea was really good. So at 5am I wrote a talk I don’t actually have to give. #ADHD

#AskAConservator #HaveIdoneEnough A lone Silverfish found in a textile box hiding in the folds of fabric. Discarded all the tissue, Textile is in the freezer, new glue traps out, old cardboard style conservation box saw some sunshine & banished from textiles offered to stores.

@jenny_o @AICCM_OZ Thank you Jenny, we have mostly moved to just acid free tissue however we do have some buffered tissue left and I was unclear on it's use. This is very helpful.

@Purfylle @AICCM_OZ Acid free is a good quality tissue ... especially for silk and wool. Use buffered only for cotton and linen. If in doubt, acid free is the "go to"!

@AICCM_OZ Any idea what this stuff might be? No smell, probably there for 30 plus years and dissolved in cold water with no agitation in less then a minute. #AskAConservator

@jenny_o @AICCM_OZ Well, funny you should ask...the 'then curator' did try it to my horror. He reported it tasteless and shrugged his shoulders. (we'll just act like I had all that safety equipment🤫)

@Purfylle @AICCM_OZ How does it taste? Just joking! Take care with unknown substances ... brush vacuum while wearing gloves and mask.

@Purfylle @jenny_o Preventive changes can be the hardest to argue for—but of course by the time damage happens, it’s too late! Good luck!

@AICCM_OZ What is the latest take on lighting in storage/layoff areas? I volunteer where the storage and layoff area is combined and it's so dark it can be difficult to work with the textiles. #AskAConservator

@AICCM_OZ Quite possibly bi-carb, someone suggested it may have been soap, I'm fairly certain it was Grandma's best storage method! I am at a loss for if I should do anything more then just vacuum the textiles.

@AICCM_OZ Unfortunately we don't have the resources for chemical testing, we struggle to get basic archive materials and a pencil! These artefacts were stored in a wooden tea chest for longer then any current volunteers recall and I got the fun job of removing them. No damage visible.

@Purfylle Golly! Where did you find it? Things that dissolve easily in water include sugars, some salts, maybe a modified starch—it may not be possible to know without chemical tests.

@AICCM_OZ @jenny_o Thank you, that is very helpful. Surprisingly an internet search did not give this wonderful succinct answer.

@jenny_o @Purfylle Yes, alkaline-buffered papers can react chemically with some materials, it’s the same for photographs (simple acid-free is best)

@jenny_o @AICCM_OZ I am having a hard time convincing the place where I volunteer at that we need better lighting. Hopefully your endorsement will help with that :)

@Purfylle @AICCM_OZ Hi @Purfylle, great question! AICCM President here ... make sure you can see while working - damage can easily happen when handling works. We use lights while working in storage, but turn them off otherwise.
