Thinking about when Cory Booker gave a 25 hour pseudo filibuster speech that had no clear purpose and achieved absolutely nothing then wrote a book about it

the bar for resistance is set lower and lower. cracking open a cold one with the boys is a radical act. Petting a dog is a tiny rebellion. Making a peanut butter sandwich is a reclamation. A self-congratulatory, ineffective revolution indistinguishable from severe depression
Sophie Haigney@SophieHaigney

I do not in fact think “adult friendship is a radical act” or whatever hanging out is actually really normal, one of the normal things you can do, don’t make it weird for no reason

some thoughts on the American Rev: Much of the left is influenced by Gerald Horne's take, that the whole revolt against the Crown was based on preserving slavery, really doesn't hold up. it's based on Dunmore's Proclamation, which was issued when the revolt was already in effect and was really an expression of the Virginia faction. His attempt to make this original sin of the founding of the US occludes the primary original sin, which was settler-colonialism, as the revolution did give help birth to an abolitionist movement and made slavery a contested issue. The idea that slavery would have been abolished sooner if the colonies stayed with the crown doesn't really hold up to scrutiny. That said, the kind of ideas of freedom and independence that did inspire abolitionist sentiments among the "patriots" was still essentially tied to a "homegrown democratic-republicanism" that was tied to independent landownership, which was inherently tied to genocide of the indigenous population. You still see this in how warped American notions of freedom as some kind of independent sovereign citizen, autonomous from all social responsibility, defending their patriarchal fiefdom from the "brown hordes". That said, the American rev was still part of a broader wave of Atlantic revolutions, and it was of course the least radical of them, but it's hard to argue that it wasn't an important impetus to these revolutions. The fact you had Jacobin clubs forming in the American North while their compatriots in France were showing solidarity with the Haitian rebels while the Americans were in fear, is telling I think. Or the fact that even the most radical American revolutionary, Thomas Paine, was a Girondin in France. Just some initial thoughts.
