So, where did all these cats come from?
Robinhood had a ritual of telling teammates to “put a cat on it.” It was a very Robinhood thing. It reflected the idea that we were approaching finance differently — we couldn’t just copy the patterns used by other apps, banks, or brokerages. Instead, whenever someone had an idea, they were encouraged to “put a cat on it” and make it a little more fun.
The phrase came from Robinhood’s offices, where cats were everywhere: cat murals, figurines in every meeting room, and even in the product itself. If you swiped all the way to the end of the cards on the home screen, a winking cat would appear.
The cat became a symbol of Robinhood’s culture: don’t copy what already exists in finance, which is often serious, gray, and boring. Instead, add a touch of fun and personality to everything you build.
