He was not drinking champagne ; ( he should have taken a sip) he was celebrating a world-class event where PETRONAS was a major sponsor ; yet he had to apologise because he was cornered by the hypocrisy of a community that confuses symbolic sin with real sin What’s truly absurd is that the same society that condemned him remains silent when our govt colluded with national footballers to cheat FIFA by falsifying their documents. That, somehow, is forgivable. But a man holding a bottle of champagne he didn’t drink becomes a national scandal. This inversion of morality reveals a dangerous sickness. We have become a people more obsessed with appearances than ethics. We don’t feel the same outrage when politicians tell lies or plunder billions, when athletes falsify records, or when officials abuse their power. But a mere image of wine celebration triggers pious outrage. Islam does not ask us to perform morality ; it asks us to live it. The Qur’an condemns hypocrisy far more than it condemns the splashing of wine. Yet in Malaysia, pretending to be pious is often rewarded, while integrity is discarded
