Partners In Health announced that its founder, Dr. Paul Farmer, unexpectedly passed away today in his sleep while in Rwanda.
Dr. Farmer was 62 years old. He is survived by his wife, Didi Bertrand Farmer, and their three children.

Congrats to @QifangB @andrewazman et al. on our new paper in @LancetMicrobe using serology to understand practical performance of RT-PCR for #COVID19 . Even rigorous protocols miss ~1/3 of cases. Timing matters a lot, and missed cases often asymptomatic.

Our team has reviewed 14 papers on #COVID vaccine phase 1-3 trials, including those produced by @moderna_tx, @BioNTech_Group/@pfizer,& @OxfordVacGroup/@AstraZeneca. All results to date have shown that the vaccines are safe and have very few side effects, including in older adults

Starting early Feb, RT-PCR positive individuals in China have to have mild symptoms or clinical evidence of infection to be classified as a case according to the official guideline. Check our our appendix for case def.

The % asymptomatic in the contact tracing group seemed low to me compared to surveillance in Iceland, etc. Is your % asymptomatic what you expected, or was there something unique about the case finding in the region during this time?

It is rare to find large primary data of cases and close contacts, for which RT-PCR testing was universal in the early phase of an outbreak. It was a tremendous amount of effort to collect this dataset. Credit to Shenzhen CDC and Peng Cheng Laboratory for making it happen. 1/n
