Most people hear the word cryptography and immediately tune out. The easiest way to think about it is as a translator. Imagine I only speak English and you only speak Spanish. I send a message, but before it reaches you, it passes through a translator who converts it into Spanish. When you receive it, you can understand it.  Anyone else listening in just sees gibberish they cannot make sense of. That is essentially what cryptography does. Your message starts in plain text. A cryptographic key transforms it into something unreadable. Someone with the right key can transform it back. The entire digital world relies on this process. Every online purchase. Every bank transfer. Every medical record. Every private message. Most people never think about cryptography because, when it is working, it is invisible. But the cryptography protecting those systems now needs to be upgraded to quantum-resistant standards. Organisations also need the ability to adapt as cryptographic requirements change. That is why the transition to post-quantum cryptography matters. The translator has served us well for decades. Now it is time to teach it a new language.

Most people hear the word cryptography and assume it is highly technical. One of the simplest ways to understand it is to think of it as a translator. Imagine someone writes a message in English for a colleague who speaks Spanish. Before the message is sent, it passes through a translator who converts it into a version only the  intended recipient can understand. Anyone intercepting the message would see something they cannot interpret. That is essentially how cryptography works. Information starts in a human-readable form, then a cryptographic key transforms it into unreadable data. Only someone with the correct key can convert it back into the original message. This process underpins the modern digital world. Online purchases, bank transfers, medical records and private messages all rely on cryptography operating quietly in the background. For decades, we have trusted the mathematics behind modern cryptography because solving it without the proper key would take today’s computers an impractically long time. Large-scale quantum computers are expected to solve some of those mathematical problems far more efficiently than conventional computers. Encryption will not suddenly stop working, but some of the algorithms protecting today’s communications will no longer provide the level of security they were designed to deliver. That is why organisations need to replace vulnerable cryptographic algorithms with ones designed to withstand both today’s computers and tomorrow’s quantum computers. The work also needs to leave room for cryptography to keep evolving.
