Neutral-atom quantum computers have the same dirty secret: it's all lasers.
Racks of bulky, expensive visible/near-IR laser systems to trap and manipulate atoms. Elegant qubits but bulky engineering.

@genejchan Well they're not really competing against each other. Shkreli's company is looking at building photonics accelerators for certain types of AI & HPC algorithms. $QUBT seems to be moving in the direction of photonics foundries. If anything, $QCLS will be a customer of $QUBT's

This fits the same thesis as the TFLN thread: integrated photonics is the quiet enabling layer for quantum, and it's maturing fast. The qubits get the headlines. The photonics decides whether they scale.

New paper from @Cisco Quantum Labs + @UCSB (Galan Moody group) builds the first working quantum-information-preserving photonic switch on thin-film lithium niobate. Second major TFLN paper this week hitting a real commercial target. The TFLN thesis just got another leg. 🧵
