The three biggest threats to firefly populations, according to a 2020 Tufts University study, are habitat loss, light pollution, and pesticides. In that order. The middle one is the part most people don't think about. Your porch light, your floodlights, your neighbor's "security" spotlight that lights up half the block: they drown out the firefly signals. Females can't find males. Males waste energy trying to flash brighter than the LED on your garage. Studies have measured fewer fireflies the closer you get to artificial light sources, in a clean dose-response curve. They're not just hiding. They're not reproducing. What helps, all of it free: 1. Turn off outdoor lights from dusk to about 11 PM during firefly season. 2. Use warm-colored bulbs (under 2700K) if you must have light. Aim them down. 3. Don't spray pesticides on your lawn. 4. Leave a patch of long grass and leaf litter where larvae can develop (they spend up to two years underground before they ever fly). Fireflies were one of the first wild things a lot of us remember. Most kids today see fewer of them than we did.
