Visited Hyderabad’s ART Cinema’s EPIQ screen yesterday, and this one was so perfect. Firstly, the auditorium is built steep… dramatically rising right up almost toward the projection window. It creates that steep IMAX seating feeling, where despite a 56ft screen, a very large part of your field of view belongs to the screen. Once the lights go down, it’s almost pitch black in the way a good theatre should be… no distractions, all attention just to the image. The sound is tuned with rare flat signature. I personally love this kind of EQ the most, because it’s most true to how it sounds in the sound mixer’s studio… exactly how it is intended to be heard. Some might call the bass “less,” but that would miss the point. It’s tight, controlled, and never steps over the mix. Everything sits exactly where it should… the dialogue is clean, surrounds are articulate, and the speaker alignment makes even subtle directional cues stand out effortlessly. Projection quality of SP4K-55B (a more expensive projector model than IMAX Laser XT), is easily one of the finest SDR projections I’ve seen. Bright, clean, and consistently sharp. Yes, it won’t reach the black levels of Dolby Cinema, Luxon or Barco HDR, but what it offers instead is sheer brightness. Trust me, most people prefer bright SDR images rather than HDR where majority of the scenes stay averagely bright and few scenes only go bright. The image here holds up well even with dark scenes… something most non-DC/HDR premium formats struggle with. I could not try EPIQ 650mbps content, but even standard 250mbps 4K DCP of Michael here look stellar here. If you’re ever unsure about formats for a movie, this is a safe bet. The fundamentals are so well executed here, that it can simply not fail for any movie at all. The best part is that all controls like EQ, speakers on/off “, brightness are directly controlled by QUBE. No projectionist can ruin it to save electricity, even if low occupancy. And the theatre staff is anyway very passionate about giving the audience a technically excellent experience, so you can rest assured your money is going in the hands of responsible people when you buy a ticket for EPIQ.
