Avrupa Birliği’nin 2004 yılında Güney Kıbrıs’ı tek taraflı olarak üyeliğe kabul ederek Ada’daki dengeleri bozduğu herkes tarafından bilinmektedir. O günden beri devam eden taraflı tutum, bugün Fitto’nun atanmasıyla yeni bir aşamaya taşınmıştır. Kıbrıs Türk halkına yönelik siyasi, ekonomik ve sosyal kısıtlamalar devam ederken, “güven inşası”ndan söz etmek samimiyetten yoksundur. Bu kısıtlamalar kaldırılmadan, eşitlik ilkesi tanınmadan atılacak her adım, Kıbrıs Türk tarafı açısından yok hükmündedir. Kıbrıs meselesinde kalıcı bir çözüm ancak iki tarafın egemen eşitliği temelinde, karşılıklı kabul görecek bir iş birliği modeliyle mümkündür. AB’nin bu temel gerçeği görmezden gelerek tek taraflı adımlar atması, hem kendi inandırıcılığını zedelemekte hem de Ada’da gerçek bir uzlaşı ihtimalini zayıflatmaktadır.
