In the midst of an escalating housing & homelessness crisis, the City must take a human rights-based approach in its budget by prioritizing supports for renters & people experiencing homelessness, and maximizing investments in affordable housing preservation. On World Day of Social Justice, we’re spotlighting a critical issue: many people in Canada continue to face systemic barriers to housing, especially those from marginalized communities. “Social justice and the right to housing are inseparable. Everyone deserves a safe, secure, and affordable place to call home, and when people are denied that right because of who they are or where they come from, we must take action to remove the barriers,” said Mathieu Pierre Dagonas, Acting Executive Director at CCHR. Our research report, Measuring Discrimination in Rental Housing Across Canada, shows that racialized individuals, newcomers, people with disabilities, and renters with children face disproportionately high levels of discrimination when seeking rental housing. Download the report: ow.ly/6WBL50YiMXE To learn more about our policy recommendations for addressing discrimination in rental housing, visit: ow.ly/to2a50YiMXC #HousingRights #HumanRights #SocialJusticeDay

🗣️ As housing unaffordability rises across Ontario, supporting disadvantaged communities with access to affordable financing and rental supports is critical to reducing chronic homelessness.

It's no small thing that Toronto's -5 and -15 degrees warming centres remain open in this exreme cold. With long term housing solutions nowhere in sight, @cityoftoronto must find new revenue sources now to fund adequately resourced warming spaces that stay open for most of winter. As human rights holders, unhoused residents have a human right to shelter, while our govts abandon their duty to build affordable housing stock at the scale needed.🏠 #TOpoli #RightToHousing
City of Toronto 🇨🇦@cityoftoronto

The City's -5 and -15 Warming Centres remain open, along with all surge and additional shelter spaces opened in response to the prolonged cold temperatures. Shelter system capacity remains available. Daytime drop-ins are also offering extended hours. For locations and more information on shelter services, visit toronto.ca/homelesshelp

"An Oxfam report that came out Monday shows that we have at least 300,000 homeless ppl in this country. This is a national issue and should be treated as such. Investment in housing to the scale needed is definitely an important investment from the federal govt along with partnerships from the province." Diana Chan McNally

I spoke to CTV this AM about the devastating impacts of the cold on unhoused people. Frostbite can lead to amputation, hypothermia to death. People escape the pain of being cold by using drugs, which increases risk of OD. We can't be neutral about this. ctvnews.ca/video/2026/01/…

Extreme cold can be both disabling and deadly for people without adequate shelter. Losing digits to frostbite alters how you walk, eat, write. And it's entirely preventable — but only if we provide enough warm space to come indoors. Which we aren't. toronto.citynews.ca/2026/01/22/tor…

Nearly 85,000 people in Ontario experienced homelessness in 2025, a staggering 50 percent increase since 2021, according to the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO). Meanwhile, recent provincial policies weaken tenant protections, putting more people at risk of homelessness. In a new commentary, Margaret Flynn, Director of Policy and Law Reform at CCHR; Anne-Rachelle Boulanger, Policy Analyst at the HIV Legal Network; and Douglas Kwan, Director of Advocacy and Legal Services at the Advocacy Centre for Tenants Ontario, examine how provincial policies are deepening the housing and toxic drug crises and why investing in affordable and supportive housing is critical. In December, CCHR joined @torontoacorn, @DonValleyCLS, and former Toronto City Councillor @Janet_Davis to support tenants at 500 Dawes Road in Toronto as they took collective legal action at the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) against unsafe, poorly maintained housing. Our staff lawyer, Erin Tobin, guided the tenants through their multi-tenant maintenance application and spoke at the press conference, highlighting their right to safe, secure homes. Housing is a human right, and CCHR is proud to provide legal guidance and stand with tenants at 500 Dawes Road as they organize to protect their rights and drive meaningful change. #HousingJustice #RightToHousing #TorontoHousing
