IMO, Shanahan got overly ambitious with the Steve Wilks hire. He figured the 49ers’ personnel and defensive structure was strong enough to allow for an outside-the-family hire. He didn’t let Wilks bring his own assistants and instead forced him to integrate with what SF already had. Ultimately, the 49ers implemented some effective new coverage strategies but overall, there was too much regression in run defense — especially given the talent at hand

48.6% of Brock Purdy's passing yards this season are coming from YAC. That's less than each of the past 3 MVP winners: 2020 Aaron Rodgers: 52.2% 2021 Aaron Rodgers: 52.7% 2022 Patrick Mahomes: 54.3% 2023 Brock Purdy: 48.6% Checkmate.

Purdy had a comeback win from 0-6 in the first quarter. Does that count @grantcohn?

From @greerreNFL's Era Adjusted QB ELO tool, Bryce Young is struggling mightily to start the year, but, to my surprise, he isn't flaming out as bad as Zach Wilson, Josh Rosen, or Justin Fields did through as many games. Fields also stopped the bleeding after about a dozen games.

You can’t think that Trey Lance needed reps AND then credibly say that he would’ve fit well as the 49ers’ QB3, a spot that doesn’t get any practice reps. Those just aren’t compatible lines of thought

@grantcohn I don't think anyone is calling Trey a bust just yet. Except some divided fans. Preseason games don't mean much, just like the practices.

In Brock Purdy’s first practice after tearing his UCL, he went 2-9 and threw a pick 6 and was praised for being ahead of schedule. In Trey Lance’s first game after two ankle surgeries, he went 10-15 with a TD and was called a bust. Both players lacked timing and confidence.

Controversial opinion? Drone displays are better than fireworks. Trust me, I like setting things on fire 🔥 but from an innovation perspective there’s just so much more you can do with drones. Fireworks just aren’t that exciting anymore…

@RetroBitCoach I would get a mixture of defense and offense depending on what is available. Typically there are some decent defensive players in the first draft that you can go for. So, leaning more toward defense.
