But surely you can be motivated to put in the effort to learn to drive because of your appreciation of cars, just like children can be motivated to work at reading because of their appreciation of stories? Appreciation -> function -> more appreciation

Teaching reading for pleasure is like teaching driving for pleasure. If you can’t drive, it’s no fun at all. Function precedes appreciation, and competence precedes confidence.
