UPDATE (July 30, 5:00 p.m.): RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador advises that the police operation in Port Saunders has now concluded. Residents can return to regular activities in the area. There will be an ongoing law enforcement presence in the area as policing resources demobilize and the investigation continues. Thank you to the public for your patience and cooperation.

UPDATE : Bell Island RCMP advises that the police investigation near the airstrip has concluded. Residents can now resume all normal activities. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador was proud to participate in the Bay St. George Mawio’mi (Powwow) in Flat Bay earlier this month. Officers took part in the Grand Entry, and spent the day connecting and celebrating culture and traditions with community members, Elders, and other guests in attendance. This is an amazing annual event, and we look forward to coming together to celebrate with our communities again next year!

If you are living with intimate partner violence, having a safety plan can help increase your safety – whether you stay, leave or are unsure. Consider these safety planning tips: •Teach children how to use the phone and when to call for help. •Create a code word with kids or trusted people for if/when you need help. •Keep your wallet/purse, keys, and phone where you can grab them quickly. •Prepare a safety pack. Keep it hidden or stored with someone you trust. If possible, include legal documents, licenses/health cards, medications, extra clothing for you and your children and cash, credit or debit cards. •Talk with trusted people about your plan. •If possible, open a separate bank account to save money when possible. •Keep a list of emergency numbers and contacts. If someone trusts you with the details of their safety plan or confides in you, listen without judgement, respect confidentiality and support their choices. If you believe they are in immediate danger, prioritize safety by staying with them if possible and calling 9-1-1 right away. You deserve safety and support. 💜 Help is available from police, provincial supports and community-based organizations across Newfoundland and Labrador. FINAL UPDATE (July 28 at 5:30 p.m.): RCMP NL confirms that the Trans-Canada Highway – between Badger and South Brook - has fully reopened to traffic in both directions. RCMP NL sincerely thanks all motorists and residents impacted by the closures for their patience, understanding and full cooperation. We recognize the impact these closures may have had on travel and appreciate everyone who respected the road closure and allowed emergency responders and investigators to safely complete their work and ensure the highway was safe.

UPDATE #4 (July 28, 12:00 p.m.) : The Trans-Canada Highway has reopened to alternating traffic between Badger and South Brook. However, intermittent closures will be required over the next few hours to allow crews to safely remove the remaining debris and wreckage from the roadway. Please follow all instructions from police and emergency responders and drive with an abundance of caution in this area.
