A seminar titled "2D and 3D Phases of Boron-Carbon-Nitrogen" by Prof. Pulickel M. Ajayan, Rice University, United States was hosted by the Department of Chemistry on 17 February.  The talk was focused on carbon and boron-based advanced materials that have compositions of C, BN, CN and BCN. 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐚𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐈𝐒𝐄𝐑 𝐁𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 The work was led by Dr. Santanu Talukder, Principal Investigator of the Sixth Sense Lab, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, IISER Bhopal, along with his PhD students, Dr. Swapnendu Narayan Ghosh and Mr. Debjit De Sarkar. In this project, Dr. Santanu’s team developed a low-cost, carbon-efficient microfabrication method that simplifies semiconductor mask (photomask and hardmask) production. The technique directly writes precise patterns onto nanometer-thin chromium films by confining an electrochemical oxidation reaction beneath an ultra-sharp metal probe. This approach eliminates the need for expensive cleanroom lithography, resist layers, and hazardous chemicals. Addressing key bottlenecks in lithography and etching, the method integrates with existing semiconductor processes while expanding research accessibility in India. The team has filed two patents and published their results in leading journals, supporting the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and advancing sustainable, accessible microfabrication aligned with global development goals. Research led by Dr. Tanmay Basu from the Department of Data Science and Engineering along with our PhD scholar Mr. Prateek Sarangi and a Radiation Oncologist Dr. Riya Agarwal from Jawaharlal Nehru Cancer Hospital in Bhopal has been featured in Dainik Bhaskar for the development of ProtoRadNet — An Explainable AI system for medical image diagnosis. Their foundational work has been published in a premier journal "Artificial Intelligence in Medicine": sciencedirect.com/science/articl…. Unlike conventional “black box” AI models, ProtoRadNet identifies and highlights specific regions in MRI, CT scans, and X-rays that influence its diagnosis, making AI-driven decisions more transparent, interpretable, and trustworthy for clinicians.
