We have organized the “Turtles Friend” Environmental Art Competition, an inspiring initiative aimed at raising awareness among students about the importance of protecting marine turtles and preserving our marine ecosystem. Through creativity and art, participating students expressed powerful messages about environmental responsibility and the role each of us can play in safeguarding marine life for future generations. This competition reflects our commitment to combining education, awareness, and community engagement in support of environmental conservation. A sincere thank you to all participating students, teachers, partners, and supporters who contributed to making this event a success. Dr. Jaklin Al-Batani, Head of Ruaa Centre, joined a national workshop tackling illegal fishing & ghost gear—two major threats to marine life. She spotlighted Ruaa’s impactful work protecting endangered marine turtles in the Gulf of Aden through conservation projects, awareness campaigns, and community action. She also emphasized the “Save Marine Turtles” project (UNDP–GEF-SGP) and called for stronger collaboration to protect our oceans and biodiversity.

A post-Eid Al-Fitr coastal cleanup campaign was carried out on Alzizi Island, with active participation from local women—reflecting our commitment to empowering women as key partners in protecting marine ecosystems and preserving coastal biodiversity.

Despite the holy month of Ramadan, our field team continues the camping and monitoring program, working tirelessly to ensure the protection of sea turtles throughout the nesting season. @GEF_SGP

While some destroy nature, others dedicate their lives to protecting it. Dr. Jaklin reminds us that saving a turtle today means protecting life tomorrow. The environment is everyone’s responsibility, not an optional luxury.

Today, we met with the local community in Ras Omeran coastal village alongside the sea turtle documentation and monitoring team to review progress and follow up on activities during the ongoing nesting season, reinforcing community partnership in protecting marine biodiversity.
