Yesterday, I heard and saw a Ruffed Grouse drumming, first of the fall season for me. The incredible drumming sound is made as the bird strikes the air (not the log or its wings) vigorously enough to create a brief vacuum, in effect causing a miniature sonic boom. Amazing!
