I like WV, Appalachia, history, statues, historic preservation, christian universalism, democracy, & distributism. Degrees in none of these.

On April 11, 1960, John F Kennedy’s work in the democratic primary election in WV began. That race awakened the country to a moral crisis that set the war on poverty reforms of the ‘60s in motion. This thread traces the steps of his campaign from April 21-May 10 of that year.

May 4, 1960. This is the day of the Kennedy-Humphrey debate. (watch here: youtube.com/watch?v=DoJFIK…) It's also the day Kennedy promised to make it to Hinton, WV, after having to cancel last minute to vote for a domestic aid bill for WV.

Kennedy first flew to Bluefield where he did some events. then travelled to Welch WV visiting the elementary school, the Welch Courthouse, and the home of political boss Sidney L Christie. I’ve found sparse photos for this day. All I have is this grainy image from a newspaper article. In the image tho, Humphrey seems to be having the time of his life on a Ferris Wheel in Huntington WV!

May 3rd, 1960. Kennedy went back to Bluefield & Welch. We've established in my post about my grandfather, when JFK was in the Mercer not every speaking engagement or trip had made it into written histories, so he may have been in additional places too. But as far public info shows:

If any of yall have $40,000 dollars to spare, Heritage Auctions has transcribed a book of 78 notecards filled out by Kennedy. They're interesting and worth looking through! historical.ha.com/itm/autographs…

On May 2, 1960, Kennedy took a break from campaigning. Instead he tried to rest up from the throat issues that had been plaguing him for the last week. He especially needed his voice for the upcoming May 4th debate against Humphrey. Kennedy's throat problems in the campaign resulted in a really special collection of campaign artifacts that I will never be able to afford, but are nonetheless very cool. Kennedy had dozens of handwritten note cards to avoid overburdening his voice. I'm going to show you some below:
