And now a question for you: is it possible for year 7 students to earn merits during half term? 😇

@PinkerStraws @RoyalHighBath Well done! They are the extreme cases. Can you generalise for a smaller square with side x (where 0<x<12) and show that the area is independent of x?

@RHSBMaths @RoyalHighBath Yes. Even if the smaller square is size 0, the shaded space will be 72 because the bottom and top right triangles would no longer exist, and if the smaller square is size 12 then the top triangles would not exist and we could shear the bottom triangle to be half the square.

@RHSBMaths @RoyalHighBath The answer is 72: the top left triangle has the area 36 because it is one quarter of 12 x 12, the top right triangle has area 18 because it is half of 6², and the bottom right triangle can be sheared so that it occupies half the bottom right square, again making 18.
