How is the order of names on a ballot decided in RI? You can witness our next ballot placement lottery live on our Facebook or at our Elections Division this Friday at 5 p.m.! This randomized process helps fairly determine the order of candidates or parties on your ballot.

Rhode Island 250 recognizes that we could not commemorate 250 years of independence without service and sacrifice from our service members. More than 150 students wrote letters to soldiers to thank them for their service. Take a moment to read what they had to say!

To get on the ballot, candidates need registered voters to sign their nomination papers. If you're asked to sign, remember these 3 things: ➡️ A signature is not a vote ➡️ The candidate must be running in your district ➡️ Your party does not matter

Rhode Island House of Representatives
Commentary in Globe Rhode Island by @RISecState, @anastatesenate2, and @JoshuaJGiraldo: In the Rhode Island State House, outside of the Secretary of State’s office, is a banner featuring a quote from Representative John Lewis: “The vote is the most powerful nonviolent change agent you have in a democratic society. You must use it because it is not guaranteed.” But despite the power of the vote as a nonviolent tool, we increasingly see violence and vitriol in our nation’s politics. And, perhaps most abhorrently of all, we’ve witnessed federal agents deny people their Constitutional rights and commit acts of aggression and violence against the very people they are sworn to serve and defend. Naturally, this has created new fears – fears that once seemed out of the realm of possibility – of federal agents at polling places to intimidate or even prevent voters from accessing the ballot. We cannot let this fear stop eligible voters from turning out this fall. So, we’re taking action. Full commentary: bostonglobe.com/2026/06/25/met…
