We need to give our world-class farmers and ranchers the tools they need to produce the food we rely on. Thanks to the relentless advocacy of both the Alberta and Saskatchewan governments, farmers are once again being allowed to use strychnine on destructive gopher populations which are causing excessive crop and grassland losses.
RJ Sigurdson@RjSigurdson

Please see my statement regarding the federal Pest Management Regulatory Agency’s acceptance of our resubmission for emergency use of strychnine, as well as a map of approved strychnine use areas throughout the province. alberta.ca/release.cfm?xI…

🚨BREAKING: This is incredible news for producers across the Prairies. After strong advocacy from industry, along with Alberta and Saskatchewan working collaboratively to stress the immediate need for emergency use of strychnine, I’m glad to see the PMRA has reversed its decision on our submission. This is a huge win for our agriculture industry, ensuring our producers have the tools they need to better manage their operations and continue providing high quality products. canada.ca/en/health-cana…

Protecting animal welfare is a responsibility we take seriously in Alberta. Today, I introduced Bill 22, the Animal Protection Amendment Act to better reflect today’s standards and strengthen protections for animals across our province. If passed, these changes would give peace officers stronger tools to respond to animals in distress, expand inspections, and significantly increase penalties for offenders. We’re also taking a leading approach by cracking down on repeat offenders and recognizing enforcement orders from other provinces, helping ensure those who mistreat animals are held accountable. This is an important step forward in ensuring animals in Alberta are treated with the care and respect they deserve. Read more here: alberta.ca/release.cfm?xI…

If passed, Budget 2026 will invest $9 million over three years to support local seed co-operatives in modernizing aging infrastructure and equipment. 🌾 These farmer-owned co-ops play a critical role in keeping Alberta’s crops pest and disease free, maintaining market confidence, and supporting producers across the province. This cost-shared program will help facilities upgrade technology, improve operations, and remain competitive, while supporting good jobs and strong rural communities. When we invest in agriculture, we’re investing in Alberta’s future. Read more: alberta.ca/release.cfm?xI…

Agreement #2 of 4 from the MOU is complete. Alberta has already demonstrated for years we can reduce methane emissions while growing our economy. Today’s agreement with the federal government keeps the management of methane in Alberta’s hands while reducing those emissions 75% below 2014 levels by 2035. We’re getting the job done for Albertans. See full details here: alberta.ca/release.cfm?xI…

This is incredible news! 10 new doctors accepting patients in Okotoks, a total of 30 in southern Alberta. This is transformative for our community. More doctors means better access to care for families right here at home, and real progress in strengthening our local healthcare system. Thank you to @AdrianaLaGrange for her leadership and continued work to strengthen our healthcare system, including recruiting and retaining doctors across the province to ensure Albertans can get the care they need, when and where they need it.

Traceability plays a critical role in protecting animal health, maintaining market access, and reinforcing the trust that consumers and trading partners place in Alberta’s livestock sector. It’s an essential part of a modern, competitive agriculture industry. Alberta’s livestock producers are world-class, and the sector is a major driver of our economy and rural communities. As these discussions move forward, it’s important that any changes support producers, reduce unnecessary burden, and strengthen, not hinder, our ag sector. As Minister, I can assure our industry and producers that their voices are heard every step of the way. Thank you to MLA @GlennVanDijken for bringing attention to this important issue.

A pleasure to be at the @RuralMA Convention and take part in the bear pit forum alongside my ministerial colleagues. Always valuable to have direct, honest conversations with rural Albertans about the issues that matter most to them. I’m grateful for every opportunity to listen, learn, and bring those perspectives back to the work we’re doing. These discussions are essential to ensuring we continue delivering practical solutions that support strong, vibrant rural communities across Alberta. Also had the chance to meet with @MDofGreenview @MackenzieCounty and @BigLakesCounty to discuss priorities and the issues they’re seeing on the ground. These conversations are always appreciated. They help ensure we’re staying focused on what matters most to Alberta’s rural communities.

Alberta continues to lead when it comes to attracting investment and growing our agri-processing sector. Today’s announcement is another strong signal that companies are choosing Alberta to expand, create jobs, and add value right here at home. Through the Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit, we’re helping businesses scale up, strengthen our food supply chain, and keep Alberta competitive on the global stage. This is what the Alberta Advantage looks like — supporting innovation, backing our producers, and building a more resilient agriculture sector for the future. Read more: alberta.ca/release.cfm?xI…
