Most CKD patients die from CV disease. NIDDK says NHLBI must fund anything with CV endpoint. NHLBI won’t fund HD studies ergo there is no funding source for CV trials in ESKD. Catch 22! How do we move the needle and get NIH to fund research on a fundamental threat to our pts?

"If doctors and nurses clocked out when their paid hours were finished, the effect on patients would be calamitous....The system knows it, and takes advantage." ... the hours were part of the profession before they were exploited nytimes.com/2019/06/08/opi…

15/Summary ✔️The goal [K+] of ≥4.0 likely derived from studies of AMI ✔️3.5-4.5 mEq/L may be more appropriate in these patients ✔️Repleting all hospitalized patients to >4 is less evidence-based ✔️Hypokalemia may lead to VT/VF via the reduced function of the Na/K-ATPase

1/ Why do we administer potassium to a goal of ≥4.0 mEq/L? As an intern, potassium (oral or IV) was likely my most common order. How did this become a key part of inpatient providers' days? Let's have a look at potassium and find out why we "replete".

It's our birthday! The first RaDaR patient was recruited 9 years ago today, on the 18th January 2010. We've come a long way since then, with over 21,000 recruits from 97 hospitals. Many thanks to our supporters @Kidney_Research @kidneycareuk @PKDCharity @RenalAssoc @RenalRegistry

I’m going to support your kids someday soon - The topic clearly appeals to nephrons - Ben told me today that he interviewed a wildlife veterinarian about salt toxicity in beavers in coastal areas...THAT is nephrology!
