The Bishop Cotton Boys and Girls School located on opposites sides on St.Marks Road, is one of the city's oldest educational institutions, and a very prestigious one.
It was initially located on a site where the Windsor Castle stands now, and started in 1865 by Rev. S T Pettigrew, the then Chaplain of St. Mark's Cathedral, and named in honor of George Cotton, Bishop of Calcutta.
Scouting began in India in 1909 at this school.
Gen KS Thimayya was an alumni of this school, and there is a Thimayya Memorial Trust that rganises the annual Thimayya Memorial Lecture, and awards the Thimayya Medal to Cottonians who have demonstrated exemplary public service.
Prominent alumni of the Boys School includes Dr. Raja Ramanna, Adm Vijay Singh Shekawat, Dinesh Gundu Rao, Nandan Nilekani, Lucky Ali, actor Prabhu, Feroz Khan, cricketers Brijesh Patel, Colin Cowdrey.
While prominent alumni of Girls School include former TN CM Jayalalitha, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, actress Kriti Kharbanda, Sreeleela.
