@Qunitii @RealCynicalFox I’m not so cynical that I think Biden admin wants to actively prolong. It’s merely they have no political will to confront Russia but are fearful of politics if it’s perceived they didn’t “help” Ukraine. Thus reactionary assistance.

@RealCynicalFox At this point its quite obvious that Biden Admin. wants to prolong the conflict not resolve it. To me, it looks like that US wants to bleed Russia out, prolonging Ukr. conflict instead of finding solution to end it. (using military and/or diplomatic means)

Short 🧵: While this headline comes from more of the usual, and often denigrated by me, unfounded speculation by anonymous officials - I'm still going to use it to make a point about introducing western systems to the UAF. 1/ politico.com/news/2023/01/0…

For decades German intellectuals lectured the world about "moral duty", "historic responsibility", "Never Again",... and in 2022, when "moral duty", "historic responsibility", "Never Again", were acutely needed they were like: "Nope, we're super cool with russia doing genocide."
Thomas C. Theiner@noclador

The most surprising thing for me in 2022 was that Italian fascists are more ethical, honest, clear eyed, realistic, and empathic than German intellectuals.

@politicalmath Everyone just stop! Stop testing everyone with a sniffle. Stop reporting sewage virus levels (a lagging indicator at that). Stop egging on the hand wringing. Over Christmas our family had 2 COVIDs, 1 (verified) flu, and 2 ILIs. Winter has always been this way. It always will.

@KelleyKga They rounded UP by 25%?! Because they couldn’t afford a decimal point? That’s adding 48 deaths to the study population. That alone smacks of author and reviewer bias.

2/ Also worth pointing out that the rate of hospitalization or death was 203 out of 25,054 - 0.8% - in this study of vaccinated at-risk adults. (Note: They rounded to 1% in the study documentation.)

A couple of corrections: This is the *Case* Fatality Rate of Covid for study participants (0.032%), not the IFR because all participants had "confirmed COVID-19." It's also among people 50+ *OR* 18+ at high-risk (not both). And 93% had 3 or more doses of vaccine.

The news is absolutely excellent. Among participants—people over age 50 with medical conditions placing them in the high-risk category and who had confirmed SARS-CoV-2—only 8 deaths occurred among 25,054 patients. That’s an infection fatality rate of 0.032%, or 1 in 3,132 cases.

I’ve mentioned it before, @HBO did an absolutely chilling movie on the Wansee Conference entitled “Conspiracy” & released in 2001, where senior Nazi figures discussed practical implementation of this. No film better encapsulates the phrase “banality of evil.”
Military History Now@MilHistNow

On this day in 1941, Hitler directs his top officials to draw up plans for the extermination of all Jews in Europe. Joseph Goebbels, who is present for the meeting, records the details in his diary: "The Führer has decided to make a clean sweep."

"Some researchers have claimed the best thing to do for the environment is to have fewer children. The truth is more complicated." washingtonpost.com/climate-enviro… It's not at all complicated, in fact. The truth is that's dead wrong, no matter the perspective you apply to it.

I am begging... BEGGING... people to actually investigate SBF's claims before reporting them with a straight face as unvarnished truth
PoIiMath@politicalmath

@jimgeraghty Is this a thing he actually did? Like... do we have any evidence that this thing happened? Or is merely another claim from the man who said "I tell people lies that they want to believe because they are gullible and will instantly believe and report my lies as truth"

@politicalmath This kind of chart has been around for a while. You can tell any story you want if you define the 0.0 line. As near as I can tell that line is always “how the median Democrat votes”.

The left has moved only slightly to the left, but the left when I was a kid consisted of "we should not fire professors for having bad opinions" and the left now is "we must fire anyone for having any opinion that is not officially approved by our political masters"

It is true that the GOP has moved very much to the right but, to be fair, the "far right" now includes insane things like "people should be allowed to make their own medical decisions" and "we should not sterilize children and amputate their sexual organs"
Conrad Hackett@conradhackett

US: Pew Research Center analysis finds that Democrats and Republicans in Congress are now farther apart ideologically than at any time in the past 50 years. Republicans have moved further to the right than Democrats have to the left. pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2022…

@charlescwcooke Congress should tack it onto the debt ceiling vote. If Biden vetoes it the irony is rich, he creates a new emergency trying to preserve the old one.

@RealCynicalFox If they capture the dam could they just open all the sluice gates? Not as dramatic but more sustained. It might still make ferry and pontoon crossings impossible.
