"Would Stevenson have become a “ Sir ” if he had not gone to the South Seas, and had lived until literary knighthoods were in flower, thanks, perhaps, to the initiative of the Premier Lord Rosebery ?" (James Milne, The Memoirs of a Bookman)

@RLSAnthology @Barking_Cairns @StevensonMuseum The answer is the Tusitala edition! Published in the early 20s, it offers an excellent version of the text, clearly printed on quality paper and nicely bound. What's more, the edition sold in such quantitites that you can find volumes in almost any second hand bookshop. 1/2

Preparing for Friday's @arvonfoundation masterclass & thinking about this wonderful quote from @RLSte Art of Fiction. 'Some places speak distinctly. Certain dank gardens cry aloud for a murder; certain old houses demand to be haunted; certain coasts are set apart for shipwrecks'

While we are on the subject: what's the best adaptation of Kidnapped? (Or least worst, if that's your take!)

@AliBacon @RLSte Ooh, how dare you! But, in all seriousness, it is rather striking: there seems to be a pretty definite line between people thinking Stevenson was the most remarkable person they ever met, and people being like 'Oh, yeah. That guy. *shrug*', with very few inbetween.

And he did!We don't get to hear what RLS made of Hardy, but Fanny Stevenson described him as 'a pale, gentle, frightened little man, that one felt an instinctive tenderness for'. Hardy's own memeories of the meeting can be read here: tinyurl.com/7v2dd3e5
