ROPME Meeting with Representatives of the International Maritime Organization The Marine Emergency Mutual Aid Centre (MEMAC), affiliated with the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME), held a virtual meeting with representatives of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation and joint coordination in the fields of marine environmental protection, as well as preparedness and response to marine pollution incidents. During the meeting, the IMO representatives commended the continuous cooperation and the prompt and effective support provided by ROPME in advancing regional and international efforts aimed at protecting the marine environment and preserving its resources. International Day for Women in Maritime 2026 From Policy to Practice: Advancing Gender Equality for Maritime Excellence On 18 May, the global maritime community celebrates the women shaping the future of navigation and the blue economy ، from ship bridges and ports to decision-making platforms and scientific research. Across the eight ROPME Member States, women continue to strengthen their growing presence in maritime transport, marine engineering, coast guard services, port management, remote sensing, and marine sciences, reaffirming that maritime excellence begins with equal opportunities and the transformation of policies into tangible action. ROPME Marine Treasures: The Arabian Sea Humpback Whale… A Rare Giant in Our Sea Area Humpback whales live almost in all the world’s oceans, but the Arabian Sea humpback whale is considered one of the rarest humpback whale species globally. It lives in isolated groups in the Sea of Oman and the Arabian Sea, with its population estimated at only a few hundred individuals. Remarkably, it is among the very few humpback whale populations worldwide that do not migrate for a long distance, making it a unique biological treasure in our Sea Area. The Sultanate of Oman has produced an interesting documentary about this remarkable whale. ROPME Participates in International Maritime Organization (IMO) Meetings The Marine Emergency Mutual Aid Centre (MEMAC), affiliated with the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME), participated in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General’s Briefing for intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, held on 12 May 2026 in London through a hybrid format combining in-person and virtual participation via the Zoom platform. Marine desertification… the unseen threat   It is not just a decline in state of the marine environment … but a chain of losses that begins with habitat destruction and extends to the ecosystem services they provide and to the whole development process. This in turn leads to lose of our seas to their voice and its sustainability silently.   Across the ROPME Sea Area, silence is no longer an option… because our silence makes our seas silent   Your voice matters… be part of the protection.

..التصحر البحري… الخطر الذي لا يُرى ليس مجرد تراجع للبيئة البحرية… بل سلسلة من الخسائر التي تبدأ بفقدان الموائل، وتمتد إلى الخدمات التي تقدمها، وتنعكس على الإقتصاد ومسار التنمية بأكمله.. مما يؤدي إلى فقد البحار لصوتها واستدامتها بصمت.   في المنطقة البحرية للمنظمة، لم يعد الصمت خيارًا… لأن صمتنا يفقد البحار صوتها.   لصوتك أثر… فكن جزءًا من الحماية.

Three ecosystems… One life   At the heart of the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME), coral reefs, seagrasses, and mangroves stand as strong defense line against marine desertification.   From coral reefs that endure extreme environmental conditions and support economies, to seagrasses that rank among the most efficient blue carbon systems, to mangroves that protect coastlines and store carbon more efficiently than tropical forests and other habitats. These ecosystems integrate together and contribute to stability of the ecological balance and the marine life.   But the danger is growing… habitat loss, climate change, and unsustainable practices threaten these ecosystems and their productivity.   Protection of these treasures is not a choice, but a responsibility. Their loss doesn't only lead to environmental degradation, but a silence in seas and marine desertification.

ثلاثة نظم طبيعية … حياة واحدة في قلب المنطقة البحرية للمنظمة، تقف الشعاب المرجانية، والأعشاب البحرية، وغابات المانغروف كخط دفاع حصين في مواجهة التصحر البحري.   من شعابٍ مرجانية تتحدى أقسى الظروف البيئية وتدعم الإقتصاد بمليارات الدولارات، إلى أعشاب بحرية تُعد من أكفء أنظمة الكربون الأزرق، وصولًا إلى غابات مانغروف تحمي السواحل وتخزن الكربون بكفاءة تفوق الغابات الاستوائية وبقية الموائل … تتكامل هذه النظم وتسهم في الحفاظ على توازن البحر والحياة فيه.   لكن الخطر يتصاعد… فقدان الموائل، تغيّر المناخ، والممارسات غير المستدامة وغيرها يهدد توازن هذه النظم وقدرتها على الإنتاج.   حماية هذه الكنوز ليست خيارًا… بل مسؤولية. لأن فقدانها لا يؤدي فقط إلى التدهور البيئي… بل إلى صمت البحار وزحف التصحر البحري
