Its not always the directors, writers, and stars - it takes HUNDREDS of people to make movies. Most movies I worked on employed thousands. Todd is one of those people I instantly loved. @ToddVideo youtube.com/watch?v=qZe4Kl…

When I told people I wanted to make a feature film with no crew, they said it would never get finished. Now it's done, about to premiere, and is my favorite project to date. Follow your instincts.

Try to give yourself a unique advantage as a filmmaker. Many in the industry have an edge from the get-go. Whether through nepotism, special access, or trust funds to finance their movies. But you can still break in without those things. You just have to find a different way to give yourself an upper hand. I always thought the greatest advantage a filmmaker could have is the ability to consistently make movies, without needing a green light. Most filmmakers working with large budgets wait for years in between films to get back on set, practice their craft, and hone their skills. But those who figure out how to green light their own movies (no matter the scope), compound their skillset much faster while building a substantial body of work in the process. This is largely why I designed a DIY filmmaking model that didn't rely on any traditional studio gatekeepers. My true north was a constant pursuit to improve my craft. Not to make the biggest movie with the most stars. Virtually any substantial career opportunity that has come my way in recent years has been a result of embracing this approach. And it was all rooted in the idea of giving myself an edge by finding a way to get in more practice. Everyone can cultivate their own unique edge, it just takes a shift in mindset. Playing your own game > playing someone else's

It's very hard to thrive as a filmmaker if you can't recognize incremental progress in your own work. Success doesn't come in big waves, but in very small doses: Finishing a page of a script, editing a new scene, placing a line of ADR... These seemingly insignificant moments are what lead to completed features, film premieres, and accolades. The better we are at recognizing small progress, the more likely we are to stack up all these little wins and create something truly amazing. But if we are so far removed from the creative process that we can't find excitement in the little things, it's nearly impossible to keep going. Small daily wins = big long term victories.
