@elonmusk My first job after college (1977) was in a historic building. The only elevator was staffed 24/7. It was a newspaper with a newsroom murder in its early history. The elevator operators were called "security" but they were all 60+ y.o. and were only packing snacks.

Elevators used to be manually operated and were especially risky if the operator was tired or inebriated. Now, you just get in, press a button and a modern elevator, if inspected regularly, is extremely safe.
