Having lived in both Chennai and Bangalore, here is my take on these cities today.
Chennai's fall started when it lost its waterways to sewage. The city's beautiful beaches got lost out to illegal kuppams like Ayothikkupam, creating a law and order situation near the beach.
In 90s. Bangalore was a cosmopolitan city, filled with lots of trees, weather was pleasant. Very elite for an Indian city. One can get from one end of the city to the other end in 25 mins. Had pubs around the brigade road, residency road area.
Today it is crowded, become a concrete jungle, weather a few degrees more due to the cutting of trees in the name of development.
Unless one has the compulsion to live bcos of work, where Bangalore scores over Chennai handsdown, it is pointless to move into either one of these cities. Rather choose a small city like Mysore for improved QOL.

What a man! There can never be another Annavru!!
I had watched Sakshatkara in bits on TV long ago, but watching it in one go made me realize why this man is still relevant and revered to this day and probably for eternity...

@Pavanasoonu @san_x_m Girish was a very good looking boy. Why do they go to the extent of killing someone for such reasons. She could have plainly refused the proposal.

@san_x_m I will never forget this. This happened near to my old Intel office at HAL road

Her name was Shubha Shankaranarayan.
She was 21 years old, a law student in Bengaluru. She was in a relationship with Arun Varma, her 19 year old college junior. Her father did not approve and arranged her engagement to someone else.
On November 30, 2003, Shubha got engaged to B.V. Girish, a 27 year old software engineer. His family celebrated. His future seemed set.
Three days later, Shubha called Girish and suggested they spend some time together before the wedding. She proposed dinner and then a stop near HAL Airport to watch planes take off from the viewpoint on Inner Ring Road. He agreed.
While Girish stood looking at the runway, three men attacked him from behind with a motorcycle shock absorber. Shubha stood nearby and screamed at the attackers to stop, pretending to be shocked.
Girish suffered severe head injuries. He died in hospital the next morning.
His family filed a police complaint. At first, investigators found nothing. Girish had no enemies, and suspicion did not fall on Shubha because the engagement had happened just days earlier.
Then police reviewed the engagement video. Shubha appeared unhappy and disinterested throughout. Her expressions did not match someone who had just gotten engaged.
Investigators dug deeper. They discovered that Shubha had made 73 phone calls and exchanged numerous messages with Arun Varma on the day of the murder.
When confronted with the evidence, she confessed.
The murder had been planned even before the engagement. Shubha wanted to be with Arun Varma, so she, Arun, and two hired men planned to kill Girish.
Girish had been engaged for just three days.
In July 2010, all four were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. The Karnataka High Court later upheld the verdict. In 2025, the Supreme Court also upheld all four life sentences.
The Supreme Court observed:
"Shubha chose a tragic and unacceptable route to address her personal issues, which led to the loss of a young and innocent life."
He went to watch planes take off with his fiancee.
He never came home.
Repost this. Some stories should never disappear.

In talking about this whole language issue. I learnt Kannada rather late in life. In Bengaluru, where one can get by perfectly well without it. I still made that effort.
Now that I am running an MSME in Mysuru, the payoffs are obvious. My Kannada is not the best. But, I do have to talk to our workforce and give speeches to them. They know that I make grammatical errors. Some of them correct me gently and I learn. But they appreciate the fact that I make that effort to speak to them in their language.
I think that effort is what matters.

Today while doing Annadanam, a young man came to us at the temple and asked whether he could contribute to our cause. Initially, I said that we had enough but then he insisted, and that it was his birthday. A pious act like this would make his day. I relented. Later I came to know that he used to do regular gayatri homa earlier and his interests were piqued when he heard that we were from @GlobalHoma . Strange are the ways of Devatas. I started this Annadaan initiative so that regular homa practitioners can offset a bit of their rnas to the Guru lineage by doing Annadanam. Strangely it was a homa practitioner (he may not be doing it now), though a complete stranger, who came forth and did his bit, sharing his contribution. A rnanubandha?

Notwithstanding all its benefits, curd rice has an emotional value too. If you had a working mother, it was probably the easiest lunch she could pack without thinking twice. Almost every school day, my lunch box had curd rice, and we ate it without any regret. Simple, comforting, filling and full of memories. And pickle was the icing on it!
