Renters' Right to Counsel - LA

Victory! Today @LACountyBOS passed a motion to codify Right to Counsel in unincorporated areas of LA County by FY 2024-2025. It also calls for expansion of @stayhousedla for universal access to incorporated cities and unincorporated areas by 2030. When we fight, we win!

ICYMI: Victory! Yesterday, the LA Board of Supervisors passed a permanent 3% rent cap for the majority of rent stabilized units (RSTPO) in unincorporated areas of LA County. Thank you @HollyJMitchell for your leadership on this key issue!

The results of 2024 show that, for the first time since 2018, homelessness went down, with fewer people living on the streets. But, more people are experiencing homelessness inside which still means people are housing insecure and our fight against homelessness is far from over.

Amazing news: the CA state supreme court has ruled that the Taxpayer Deception Act is unconstitutional and will not be on the November ballot

However, we celebrate winning a strong permanent rent cap for the majority of RSO units - ensuring more predictable & reasonable rent ⬆️for tenants. Despite violent & divisive arguments from LLs, years of organizing & powerful tenant testimony prevailed today 👏

After today’s vote, we are disappointed in the creation of a two tier system that will impact tenants differently depending on the size LL they rent from. If the Board wants to support certain landlords financially, it should not have to fall on tenants to pay that $.

Luxury unit landlords as defined in the ordinance can increase rent by an additional 2%, up to a maximum of 5%. Tenants must be notified of this exception when they are notified of the increase.
