@WALASIA Word I've heard the sentiment a lot over the last that you're better off utilizing credit than a loan from a label.

DOOM had done some kind of indie deal where he'd agreed to sign some kind of paper. Usually he just made an agreement by convo and then got paid with no paperwork. He then had another offer from some other indie cats and came to me because he was worried about the first ones. I told him that he already had all these different monikers and that none of these people were offering him enough money (at that time) for ANY kind of exclusivity. He had his eldest son before the DOOM era, so he already had a family to care for. He needed an income from music. So he did a deal as Vik Vaughn, when technically he wasn't supposed to be doing any other albums. DOOM had a lot of aliases. Many "aka" this and that name. Once he did it once, he did it again, then he did a few where the group name was different. The point is when you sign some kind of paperwork with these indie labels, and nowadays with these majors and this 360 deal bullshit, they're going to get so much more out of it than you are. Then they can toy with your entire life by making you into a tax writeoff, or changing your release date as a form of punishment, so THEY cannot be trusted to keep to their terms of the deal which are in their favor anyway. For the indie artist of today I wouldn't advise getting involved with a label anyway. They are not serving a purpose. You need an investor or a good, strong credit card - yours or someone else's - to press up your product. You need someone you can trust who'll help you with the business side of things. But if you DID sign some bullshit, and you're being enslaved or restricted from making a living, you should break out of that by any means necessary. YOU can break the terms of a contract. IF they sue you or drop you, who cares?? Probably a real blessing in disguise to free yourself of that fuckshit. Just my two cents. Just a woman who's been working in the business of music for 39 years. Just the daughter of a renown musician who worked in the biz from the 1940s until the 2010s when he died. What would I possibly know?
