Thomas moved through machine gun fire and killed the enemy but was mortally wounded in the process. His actions saved the rest of his team from imminent danger and enabled them to complete the mission. For his heroism and sacrifice, Thomas was posthumously awarded the Silver Star. Thomas served 9 combat deployments with the SEALs, also earning 3 Bronze Stars with "V", and a Purple Heart.
