Welcome aboard @RVSallyRide, #STEMSEAS crew! The Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Student Experiences Aboard Ships program aims to increase diversity in geological and ocean sciences through transformative participatory experiences.

After surveying 36,000 acres of seafloor off the coast of Los Angeles in an area reported to have been a chemical dumping ground, Scripps researchers have identified over 27,000 possible barrels, and 100,000 total debris objects on the seafloor. Read more: scripps.ucsd.edu/news/scripps-o…

Two AUVs used were deployed to work in tandem to map the seabed at a high resolution. The robots adjust to changes in the topography flying at a constant 20 meters above the seafloor, using high frequency side-scan sonar to send signals 150 meters on each side of the vehicle.

Sea-going scientist and staff member @melissatruth has been on over 40 research cruises, including many on @RVSallyRide. Melissa said the late Sally Ride is one of her role models due to her work as an astronaut, physicist, and #STEM educator. "What an amazing life and career."
