An amazing woman, taught by Ralph Vaughan Williams and the first British woman to score a feature film.
For me, her masterpiece is "Penillion."

Young French tenor, Cyrille Dubois, has recently made an all-Vaughan Williams album called Landscapes. He gives us Vaughan Williams with a slightly French flavour, of which Ravel would surely have approved.

Kalmar recorded a very fine performance of Vaughan Williams’s 5th with the (superb) Oregon Symphony Orchestra. (The CD booklet has excellent notes on the spirit of the work.) @andrewCDmcg @OregonSymphony @RVWinfo @robertflute @ArcheryPromos

@Mahler18601911 I remember the English horn player - apparently substituting for their normal one - just playing so well. The wind section was incredible too. And they got the string style right. Andrew Davis I think worked some magic there.
English

@RVWinfo Oh without doubt, and yes it was good to see such a great piece so well received.
The orchestra played it superbly.

@Mahler18601911 The Romanza from that performance is the best I've heard. Remarkable too to see the reaction from some of the audience (I'm not a fan of that generally, but it's still amazing to see).
English

@RVWinfo Yes you're right.
There's a beautiful performance of the 5th on YouTube with Sir Andrew Davis and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra.
The opening of the 5th shows his distinctive quality.

@Mahler18601911 The general opinion has changed though I think. The Pastoral has been given really good treatments on German and French radio. In Britain too there was quite a bit of good reappraisal during the centenary year.
English

@RVWinfo Yes he had such a unique voice and this "cowpat composer" label is so unjustified.
It really grinds my gears!
