@MatthewEnright @ZippyJans Indeed, I’ve seen lodged areas as well. Possible that seed drop as the panicle matures makes the wild oat lighter so maybe slightly less prone to lodging than grain crops that retain their seed better?

@ZippyJans @RWildOat You just have to grow them thicker! I’ve got them to lodge in thick spots before.

@RWildOat how come wild oats grow so tall; and yet they don’t lodge?

@ZippyJans First guess, selection pressure over time has favoured survival of wild oats with good height and exceptional straw strength. There are possibly tame oat plant breeders that have a more thorough answer on the genetics.
