8 Nissan - The York Massacre – 1190 On this day in 1190, the York Massacre took place. This was one of the darkest tragedies in medieval Jewish history which unfolded in the city of York, England. Approximately 150 Jews were massacred at Clifford’s Tower, marking the worst anti-Jewish attack ever recorded in the British Isles. The violence was part of a broader wave of anti-Jewish riots that began months earlier at the coronation of King Richard I, when Jews who came to pay their respects were turned away and attacked. At the time, many Jews were involved in moneylending, and local nobles and townspeople—deeply indebted to them—saw an opportunity to erase what they owed through violence. As tensions reached York, the Jewish community sought refuge in the royal castle. However, with no meaningful protection and with local knights and clergy joining the mob, the situation quickly became dire. Faced with the threat of forced conversion, many chose to take their own lives rather than abandon their faith, while others were killed when the attackers set the tower on fire. In the aftermath, the rioters destroyed records of debts owed to Jews, effectively freeing themselves financially, and although the crown later fined the city, none of the perpetrators were truly brought to justice. For centuries, the massacre was largely ignored, only recently being acknowledged and commemorated. The events at York serve as a stark reminder of how economic resentment, religious hatred, and political instability can converge into violence against the Jewish people. We will say at our Seders ‘in each and every generation they rise up against us to destroy us.’ Depressing right? Well, continues the Haggadah ‘the Holy One, Blessed is He saves us from their hands.’ May he continue to watch over the Jewish people and the Land of Israel!

7 Nissan - Arrest of Shabsai Bass – 1712 On this day in 1712, Shabsai ben Yosef Bass was arrested. Bass, one of the great figures in Jewish scholarship and the founder of Jewish bibliography, was arrested along with his son by local authorities in Silesia, Poland. Bass, a printer and author best known for his Sifsei Chachamim on Rashi and his groundbreaking bibliographic work Sefsei Yeshenim, had built a major Hebrew printing operation that served the scholarly needs of Jewish communities across Europe. His arrest came after years of growing hostility toward Jewish life and learning in the region. The charges against him were baseless, driven largely by pressure from church authorities who sought to suppress Hebrew books, claiming they contained anti-Christian material. His works, which were in reality devoted to Torah study, education, and the preservation of Jewish knowledge, were confiscated. Bass and his son were imprisoned, and the broader Jewish community once again faced the familiar threat of censorship, persecution, and the targeting of its intellectual life. After ten weeks, Bass was ultimately released when a proper review found no wrongdoing. But the episode underscored a recurring reality of Jewish life in exile: even the dissemination of Torah and scholarship could be treated as a threat. Despite this, Bass’s contributions endured. His works continued to shape Jewish learning for generations, a testament to the resilience of Torah in the face of repeated attempts to silence it. 6 Nissan - Disappearance of Simon of Trent - 1475 On this day in 1475, Simon of Trent went missing.  Simon was a young Christian boy from the city of Trent in northern Italy. What began as a local search for a missing child quickly spiraled into one of the most infamous blood libels in Jewish history. Despite the Jewish community’s immediate concern and even their participation in the search, suspicion rapidly turned against them, fueled by existing antisemitic rhetoric and recent sermons that had already vilified the Jews of the city. Within days, the discovery of the child’s body led to the arrest of the entire Jewish community. Under brutal torture, false confessions were extracted claiming that the Jews had murdered the child for ritual purposes. In reality, it was the Jews themselves who had reported finding the body, but this fact was suppressed. Fifteen Jewish men, including the community’s leaders, were executed, while others suffered imprisonment, persecution, and lasting trauma. The small and vulnerable Jewish community of Trent was effectively destroyed. The consequences extended far beyond the city itself. The case was widely publicized and accepted as fact in many parts of Europe, igniting further violence, expulsions, and restrictions against Jews in surrounding regions. Though there were voices, even within the Church, that challenged the accusations, the damage had already been done. The events of this day stand as a stark example of how quickly baseless accusations could be weaponized against Jews, with devastating and far-reaching consequences for entire communities. 5 Nissan - Jews Expelled From Jaffa and Tel Aviv - 1917 On this day in 1917, the Jewish communities of Tel Aviv and Jaffa were expelled. Djemal Pasha, the Ottoman governor of the region, ordered the evacuation of the inhabitants of Jaffa. What began as a wartime directive quickly became a mass expulsion of the Jewish populations of Jaffa and nearby Tel Aviv. With World War I underway and British forces advancing, the Ottomans grew suspicious of the Jews, particularly following the exposure of the a spy network, and viewed them as a potential threat. Thousands were forced from their homes with little notice and were not allowed to take most of their belongings. Families were scattered throughout the land, with a migration committee led by Meir Dizengoff directing refugees to places like Petach Tikva, Kfar Saba, Tiberias, and Tzfas. Despite these efforts, conditions were brutal. Hunger, disease, and exposure, especially during the winter of 1917–1918, claimed the lives of an estimated 1,500 Jews. While some non-Jewish residents were eventually able to return, the Jewish population remained displaced until the British took control in 1918. Tel Aviv, the first modern Hebrew city, was left nearly empty. Though the community would rebuild, this expulsion stands as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of Jewish life under foreign rule, and of the resilience of the early Yishuv in the face of hardship. 4 Nissan - 92nd Street Y - 1874 On this day in 1874, the Young Men’s Hebrew Association (YMHA) was founded. The organization was an institution in New York City to promote the mental, moral, social, and physical development of Jewish young men. The association soon moved from its temporary quarters to the Harvard Rooms at 42nd Street and Sixth Avenue, where it began offering lectures, literary and debating societies, and free classes in subjects ranging from Bible and Hebrew to bookkeeping, stenography, and mechanical drawing, along with programs in physical culture. The YMHA also founded a library that later became the basis of the Aguilar Free Library, eventually incorporated into the New York Public Library. Though the organization faced financial difficulties in its early years, it endured and expanded its influence. A downtown branch on the Lower East Side later gave rise to the Educational Alliance in 1891, one of the most important immigrant aid institutions of the era. A major turning point came when philanthropist Jacob H. Schiff helped secure a permanent home on Lexington Avenue, culminating in the dedication of a new building at 92nd Street and Lexington Avenue on May 30, 1900. The success of the New York YMHA inspired similar institutions across the United States in cities such as Philadelphia, New Orleans, St. Louis, Boston, and San Francisco. In 1945, the YMHA merged with the Young Women’s Hebrew Association to form the YM-YWHA, and in 1972 the institution adopted the name by which it is widely known today, the 92nd Street Y, which continues to serve as one of the most influential Jewish cultural and educational centers in America. 2 Nissan - Rav Yaakov Yosef Twersky - 1968 On this day in 1968, Harav Yaakov Yosef Twersky, the Skverer Rebbe, passed away, making this day his yartzeit. Born in Skver, Ukraine, on 15 Tammuz 1899, he was the son of Rav Dovid Twersky, the Skverer Rebbe, and a descendant of the illustrious Chernobyl chassidic dynasty. His early years were marked by upheaval, as pogroms following the Bolshevik Revolution forced his family to flee their home. After the passing of his father in 1919, the family eventually settled in Bessarabia. In 1925 he married the daughter of Rav Pinchas Twersky of Ostilla and spent several years in Belz before returning to his father-in-law’s town. Though the townspeople sought to appoint him as their rav, he declined. Later he accepted the request of Skverer chassidim in Romania to lead them as Rebbe. During the Second World War he endured tremendous hardship, as the Nazi invasion devastated Jewish communities throughout the region. After the war he moved to Bucharest and eventually left Europe, traveling through several countries before arriving in the United States on 29 Adar I. In America he rebuilt the Skverer chassidic community, first in Boro Park, NY, then in Williamsburg, and ultimately by founding the chassidic village of New Square near Monsey, New York. Moving there in 1957, he created a model Torah community dedicated to holiness, modesty, and devotion to Chassidus. Many flocked to his humble home seeking guidance, blessing, and inspiration. After his passing on this day in 1968, he was buried in New Square and was succeeded by his son, the present Skverer Rebbe, continuing the dynasty he so courageously rebuilt after the devastation of Europe. 1 Nissan - Mishkan Erected - 1312 BCE On this day in 1312 BCE, the construction of the Mishkan was complete. The Mishkan, or Tabernacle, was the portable sanctuary for the Jews in the wilderness. After the Jewish people donated materials with great enthusiasm, the skilled artisans under the leadership of Betzalel ben Uri and Oholiav ben Achisamach completed the intricate work of building the Mishkan and its vessels. Gold, silver, copper, precious stones, fine fabrics, and acacia wood were all fashioned into a dwelling place for the Divine Presence among the Jewish people. Although the construction of the Mishkan was actually completed on the 25th of Kislev, it was not erected immediately. The Almighty instructed Moshe to wait until the first of Nissan to assemble and dedicate the Mishkan. That day marked the beginning of the Mishkan’s service and the moment when the Divine Presence rested among the Jewish people in a visible way. The Mishkan served as the central place of worship for the Jewish people throughout their sojourn in the desert and for centuries afterward in the Land of Israel until the building of the Temple in Jerusalem. During that time it rested in several locations, including Gilgal, Shiloh, Nov, and Givon, where offerings were brought and the spiritual life of the nation was centered before the construction of the Temple by King Solomon. 29 Adar - National Day of Protest Against Nazi Persecution - 1933 On this day in 1933, tens of thousands gathered across the United States and other parts of the world for a National Day of Protest against the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany. Just weeks after Adolf Hitler y”s became Chancellor of Germany on January 30, Nazi supporters began a campaign of harassment and violence against Jewish businesses and individuals. Jewish shops were picketed, customers intimidated, and Jews publicly humiliated or assaulted, while the regime largely tolerated and sometimes encouraged these actions. In response, Jewish organizations organized a massive protest rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City, with similar gatherings held in dozens of cities across the United States. More than 55,000 people filled the Garden and the surrounding streets, while rallies also took place in Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia, and more than seventy other locations. Prominent political and religious leaders spoke out, joined by Jewish and Christian clergy who called for an end to the brutal treatment of German Jews. The demonstrations helped launch an international boycott of German goods and represented one of the earliest global protests against the Nazi regime. Yet despite the size and passion of the demonstrations, they produced little change. The persecution of Jews in Germany not only continued but intensified, while much of the world remained hesitant to confront the growing Nazi threat. In hindsight, the National Day of Protest stands as both a powerful moral statement and a sobering reminder that early warnings about Nazi brutality were heard, but largely ignored. 28 Adar - Roman Decree Lifted - 139 On this day, harsh decrees against the Jewish people were repealed, and the day was recorded as a minor holiday. During the Hadrianic rule after the Bar Kochva Revolt, authorities had issued severe restrictions forbidding Jews from studying Torah, circumcising their sons, and observing Shabbos. These decrees struck at the very heart of Jewish life and identity, attempting to sever the Jewish people from the commandments that had sustained them for generations. In response, Rabbi Yehudah ben Shammua and several of his colleagues sought a way to overturn the decrees. They consulted a Roman noblewoman who had influence among the ruling authorities. Following her advice, the sages organized a dramatic nighttime protest, crying out publicly: “Are we not brothers? Are we not the children of one father and one mother? Why are we different from all other nations that such harsh decrees are imposed upon us?” Their protest succeeded. The authorities lifted the bans and permitted the Jewish people once again to circumcise their sons, engage in Torah study, and observe Shabbos. Because these central mitzvos were restored, the day was commemorated in Megillat Ta’anis as a minor festival, celebrating the preservation of the Torah and the resilience of Jewish faith in the face of oppression. 27 Adar - Himmler–Kersten Agreement - 1945 On this day in 1945, the Himmler–Kersten Agreement was signed. The agreement was between Nazi SS leader Heinrich Himmler and his personal physician Felix Kersten. As Allied forces closed in on Nazi Germany during the final months of World War II, Kersten used his unique position and influence over Himmler to secure a series of humanitarian commitments regarding the fate of concentration camp prisoners. Signed in secret at the Hohenlychen Sanatorium in the presence of Himmler’s secretary Rudolf Brandt, the agreement included four pledges made “in the name of humanity.” Himmler agreed that concentration camps would not be destroyed as Allied armies approached, that white flags would be raised and control handed over peacefully, that the killing of Jews would cease and they would be treated the same as other prisoners, and that inmates would not be forcibly evacuated while Sweden would be allowed to send food parcels to Jewish prisoners. Although the agreement came in the final weeks of the war, it had significant consequences. It helped save the lives of approximately 60,000 Jewish prisoners and facilitated the rescue of more than 15,000 additional prisoners through the Swedish-led White Buses operation in March and April of 1945. While it did not undo the horrors of the Holocaust, the agreement stands as a rare instance in which diplomacy and personal intervention helped preserve thousands of lives during the final collapse of Nazi Germany. 26 Adar - Touro Synagogue - 1677 On this day in 1677, the Jewish community of Newport, Rhode Island purchased land for a burial ground. This cemetery is widely considered the first piece of land in the American colonies owned by a Jewish congregation. The community itself had been founded less than two decades earlier, when about fifteen Sephardic Jewish families arrived in Newport in 1658, likely from the Caribbean, where they had been part of the Spanish and Portuguese Jewish diaspora. For many years the small but vibrant community held prayer services in private homes before establishing permanent communal institutions. The Newport Jews maintained strong Sephardic traditions and were connected to the broader trading networks that linked Jewish communities throughout the Atlantic world. Their congregation eventually became known as Congregation Jeshuat Israel, and over time it grew into one of the most prominent Jewish communities in colonial America. The cemetery they purchased in 1677 still stands today and remains the resting place of many of Newport’s earliest Jewish residents. The community later built Touro Synagogue, dedicated in 1763. It is the only surviving synagogue building in North America from the colonial era and the oldest synagogue building still standing and functioning in the United States. The Newport Jewish community was the recipient of a now famous letter in 1790 when George Washington wrote “May the children of the Stock of Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other inhabitants.” Find out more: WhatsApp: zurl.co/j1TvW Facebook: zurl.co/aElXh Instagram: zurl.co/v1Ro0 LinkedIn: zurl.co/3Dimr x: zurl.co/0x6HR . #jewish #israel #judaism #jew #jerusalem #torah #kosher #jewishlife #shabbat #jews #shabbatshalom #israeli #hebrew #jewishculture #jewishholidays #jewishgirl #jewishcommunity #jewishhistory #jewishpride #jewishwedding #synagogue #jewishwomen #fyp #foryou #viral #foryoupage #fy #trending

24 Adar - Rabbi Eliezer Lipman Silberman – 1882 On this day in 1882, Rabbi Eliezer Lipman Silberman passed away, making this day his yartzeit. Silberman was a German rabbi and a pioneering Hebrew journalist. Born in Königsberg in 1819 to parents who had emigrated from Russia during the period when Jews were first permitted to settle in the city during the Napoleonic wars, he was raised in the Kovno region of the Russian Empire after his father’s early death. As an adult he returned to Prussia and settled in Lyck, where he served as a shochet and rabbi. In 1856, Silberman founded HaMaggid, the first weekly newspaper published in the Hebrew language. The paper carried global and Jewish news, feature articles, and sections devoted to Judaic scholarship, while also becoming the first Hebrew publication to feature opinion pieces. Though its peak circulation was only about 1,800 copies, each issue was widely shared and read across Europe and the Jewish world. Originally aimed at Russian Jews, HaMaggid quickly became the central platform for Hebrew journalism and public discussion. Under Silberman’s leadership, the newspaper addressed pressing Jewish social issues, including bringing attention to the plight of agunos, women unable to remarry due to the absence or refusal of a religious divorce. Contributors also reported on Jewish life across Europe, and beginning in the 1860s the paper strongly supported renewed Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel, making it an early voice connected to the emerging Zionist movement. Silberman also helped found the scholarly society Mekitze Nirdamim in 1864 to publish neglected Hebrew manuscripts, and his contributions to Hebrew letters earned him an honorary doctorate from the University of Leipzig.
