I'm keeping an eye on some hpc jobs running for work, while for my PhD I have video called myself to keep my laptop awake while a script runs for 24h. Just realised my PhD setup is a bit low tech.

@bcs_lovelace I didn't find technology interesting, but discovering that computers can be used to solve problems is what inspired me.

Giving a talk soon to school teachers about inspiring girls to consider careers in computing. If you were a girl, and are now in computing, what inspired you? What would work to inspire girls now?

Happy World Diabetes Day, on Frederick Banting's birthday, this year celebrating 100 years of insulin. Let us not forget that type 1 diabetes treatment has progressed little in those 100 years - that life saving insulin still saves their lives multiply daily.

I carved a melon, it's a bit rubbish but at least we've eaten it.

Moodle has outdone itself and I've spent a miserable 2 hours all alone on zoom.

A trip to the lake district made out of necessity not choice, was unexpectedly joyous.

The kitten is not improving my productivity.

11yo turns out to have a secret second identity as a Scratch programmer, seems serious (she has 1000s of messages).

My kids learn French, Spanish, German and Latin. In Latin they translate (simple) sentences of classic literature of historic significance. In MFL they have to tell people who their favourite footballer or popstar is. Introverts deserve the chance to learn languages too!

Happily will be a PhD student in computational biology / crystallography at Birkbeck from September.

I'm drinking instant black coffee made from a hot water dispenser, and I don't even know if it has caffeine in as the label has been (suspiciously) removed (but happily I'm on holiday, at my parents!).
